Marlton Pool Newsletter
A Little History….
Marlton Pool is a totally self-functioning,
membership based club. The past five years have
brought many changes. Knowing we have added several new members to our pool
family, we
thought we’d take the opportunity to explain a little pool history:
- 1969 – The Marlton
Swim & Recreation Club (Marlton Pool) is established, with
new homeowners as “members”; part of the package deal when buying a
house.
- 1972 – “Share
Program” established. When the land owner wanted to fill in the
pool to build more houses, members proposed that they purchase the pool
and
sell shares.
- Shares were
originally sold for $400 each & have fluctuated along with
economic conditions. Shares were a mandatory one-time fee for all new
memberships – several original members remain.
- Beginning with the
2010 Pool season, share fees are optional with new
memberships.
Several years ago, due to low membership &
some mismanagement by the previous
board, the Pool nearly had to close. New management was brought in & we have
managed to avoid closing. Among the steps taken:
-
reinstituting summer camps;
-
growing the swim lesson program;
-
renting our facility for outside
parties;
-
instituting “Eat-at-the-Pool” Nights;
-
incorporating “teen nights” – a safe
place for kids to spend summer evenings;
- asking/begging members to share their
time and talents for general maintenance
around the pool.
Current Challenges….
Maintaining a community pool is expensive. We are constantly trying to stay
afloat. We rely
heavily on our memberships just to pay the routine bills that come with
managing a pool:
-
opening costs: filling the pool, initial
chemicals;
-
seasonal chemicals;
-
monthly electricity;
-
monthly water;
-
labor: lifeguards, pool operators
-
Snack bar supplies.
In addition to these routine costs, there are
others that are quickly piling up in order to
maintain a 40+ year old pool:
-
Pump room
valves need to be replaced;
-
Pool surface needs cracks repaired
(will need to be totally resurfaced in the near future);
-
Pavilion needs refurbishing;
- Bathrooms/changing rooms need much
repair/refurbishing: stalls need
replacing; leaks need to be located & repaired, etc.
These – among others – are the jobs that we
either need to hire someone for, have someone
volunteer to take them on by sharing their time & talent.
Remember – this is not “Marlton’s
Pool” – this is “Our Pool”! Just as we have to maintain our homes, we
have to maintain our
pool. We have had some incredible help over the years, and we truly
appreciate everything
and anything that you have done!!
We understand that our members want to come to the pool and relax – we, of
course – wish
that for everyone, and there are many opportunities to give of your time
throughout the year.
So….
Send us an email (marltonpool@gmail.com)
to let us know how you are able to help your pool.
